Port block issues (Computer & Hardware Questions)

by Goonia, Wednesday, February 05, 2014, 13:24 (1902 days ago)

Hello i'm on a network that has ports blocked and is managed by an outside company. Ports on the network are blocked other than 80, 443, and also 8080. I am trying to figure out if the filter is from our service provider or the router. I ran tracert but it only works on port 80 which is actually open so that doesn't tell me much. Is there another way to see where the connection is being blocked?

That is kinda hard to determine....however tracert can actually offer you some hints cause it tells you (most of the time) each gateway data goes thru from point A to point B. With that being said, one of those gateways (hops) can contain the filtering component. The easiest way to find out if your ISP is blocking ports is to call them.

The next suggestion would be to put a Windows XP, 7, 8 laptop in front of the router that has remote desktop enabled. Then goto JT TECH - Port Poker and test 3389. If its open then the your router / firewall is probably causing the blockage.

Hope this helps! :-D
