Sharing files with Windows XP (Computer & Hardware Questions)

by Diane, Saturday, August 11, 2012, 10:55 (2051 days ago)

I recently got a new desktop and want to share my pictures on my old computer on the new one. I right clicked the folder and selected"sharing and security" allowing them to be shared on the network, but when I go to My Network Places on the new computer, the folder isn't showing up there. Assistance please.

Sharing files with Windows XP

In order to see the new computer you need to have both PCs in the workgroup unless you enter the "old" computer's IP address in an address bar of a folder or in the run box. Example: \\

When trying to view the old computer's shared files through Network Places both computers need to be in the same workgroup. To check that go to Windows "Help and Support" option under the Start tab and search "workgroup". Look for "Specify computer and workgroup names". Hope this helps.
